The Bergen – Hardanger – Voss bicycle trip 

The ultimate Hardanger Fjord experience

This stunning ride along the beautiful west Norwegian Fjords lasts for five days, and lets you have nice meals and a good rest at The Historical Hotels & Restaurants along the route. A support vehicle will transport your luggage and further be at your service if needed. An additional option of E-bikes is possible for all or parts of the ride on request. Our bike guides will join you to assure that you will be on track and give you the best experience. The average biking distances per day is about 50 km and requires just a little of bicycling experience. You can read more about the trip day by day further below.

Tour day by day (with guide) –  The Hardanger Fjord Tour

  • Day 1: Arrival– Welcome to Bergen! 
  • We meet by 17.00h / 5 p.m at the new Børs Hotel in Bergen where we get together with the rest of the group and the guides who will join us on the trip. A glass of wine or mineral water and some snacks will be served. Information regarding the forthcoming trip will be given, including written information, itineraries and schedules. After the welcome gathering we will take a look at the bikes and adjust the equipment for you. Before the trip you have to choose between three different bike types: Road bikes, touring bikes, and E-bikes (E-bikes is at an additional cost). (You can read more about the bikes here). There will be possibilities for an evening walk in the centre of Bergen.

  • Day 2: Bergen– Os 
  • After a quick round trip in the centre of Bergen we head south towards Gamlehaugen, the royal residence in Bergen for a short break in the lovely garden. We continue to Troldhaugen, the home of Edvard Grieg, one of the most famous Norwegian composers. At Troldhaugen there will be possibilities to buy a snack in the cafe. We continue on local roads and bike paths towards Os. Here we will have another break at a traditional wooden boat-construction workshop that is part of UNESCO’s World Heritage list. After this we will pedal a short uphill distance to Solstrand Hotel and Spa, enjoying the beautiful view of Bjørnafjorden from the hotel pool before dinner is served. The hotel garden is absolutely stunning.

  • Highlights: Gamlehaugen – the Royal residence, Troldhaugen – Edvard Griegs home, Os boat-construction factory (Oselvarverkstaden), The Bjørna Fjord
  • Distance: 39 km/24.2 miles
  • Elevation gain: 280 m
  • Terrain: Flat with a short uphill (1,3 km) at the end of the day
  • Accommodation: Solstrand Hotel and Spa
  • Day 3: Os – Tørvikbygd
  • After a lovely breakfast at Solstrand Hotel and Spa, we pedal to the ferry quay at Hattvik, which gives us a 15-minute break on the ferry to Venjaneset. From here we will start a moderate climb in a typical west Norwegian landscape towards the guest house of the famous Olympican biathlon athletes Liv Grete Skjelbreid & Raphael Poiree. Here we will enjoy lunch and the fantastic view, before we will continue our ride towards Mundheim where we will see the Hardanger Fjord for the first time. Our final destination for the day is Hardingasete, which is indeed a very special and cosy guest house and a member of the Historical Hotels & Restaurants.

  • Distance: 65 km/ 40.4 miles
  • Elevation gain: 1077 m
  • Terrain: slightly hilly
  • Accomodation: Hardingasete
  • Day 4: Tørvikbygd – Hotel Ullensvang 
  • We will start the day with a short bicycle distance before crossing the Hardanger Fjord by ferry to reach Jondal. From here we pedal north along the fjord, through the beautiful scenery towards Herand where we can enjoy an ice cream, a snack or a coffee. We may have a look at petroglyphs from the Bronze Age, and the local old frame saw. From Herand the toughest climb of the day starts. After the top is passed we will roll on through apple and cherry gardens towards Utne where it will be possible to buy a nice lunch at Utne Hotel. This hotel is really one of the oldest in the country with traditions back to 1722. From Utne we cross the Hardanger Fjord once more by ferry to Kinsarvik, where the last distance from the quay is 10 km along the fjord to the beautiful Ullensvang Hotel.

  • Distance: 53 km/ 32, 9 miles
  • Elevation gain: 780 m
  • Terrain: Slightly hilly, a few climbs
  • Accomodation: Hotel Ullensvang (Spa, tennis, fitness-rom, indoor and outdoor pool).
  • Day 5: Ullensvang in Hardanger – Voss
  • After breakfast we bicycle back to Kinsarvik, where we board the ferry and enjoy a 45 minute beautiful boat ride in the inner part of the Hardanger Fjord. From the quay we bicycle in hilly terrain along the fjord to Granvin before we continue on to the old path of Hardanger railway. Halfway between Kvanndal and Voss we stop at the Skjervsfossen waterfall, a 150 meter two level waterfall with small footpaths connecting the levels. The last part of the ride is slightly downhill towards Voss, a most beautiful village surrounded by mountains. When arriving at Voss, we are met with refreshing drinks at Store Ringheim Hotell & Restaurant, which is our accomodation for the night. We dine in the local restaurant at the hotel.

  • Highlights: the Skjervsfossen waterfall, National Tourist Road, Voss, Store Ringheim Hotell & Restaurant
  • Distance: 47 km/ 28.1 miles
  • Elevation gain: 1216 m
  • Terreng: Flat, with a couple of uphill climbs, one major climb at the end (4km)
  • Accommondation: Store Ringheim Hotell & Restaurant
  • Day 6: Farewell!
  • After a nice breakfast at Store Ringheim Hotell & Restaurant, we will make sure that your luggage gets safe to the town centre of Voss while you bicycle down and leave your bike at the Tourist Information Office. This is where the trip ends, and we say good bye for now. Train is the easiest way to get to both Bergen and Oslo, the two largest cities in Norway.
